Budapest, the "Pearl of the Danube," was formed in 1873 by the unification of three cities — hilly Buda and Óbuda on the west bank, and flat, bustling Pest on the east — split by the wide Danube River. Grand bridges, including the iconic Chain Bridge, stitch the two halves together.

The city sits on a network of over 100 thermal springs, and its historic bathhouses — such as the vast neo-Baroque Széchenyi Baths — have been a way of life since Roman and Ottoman times. Beneath the streets lies an extensive system of caves and thermal water tunnels.
