💡 About Granada

Granada, cradled at the foot of the snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains in southern Spain, was the last stronghold of Moorish Spain, the final jewel of Al-Andalus that fell to the Christian monarchs in 1492. That extraordinary heritage has left it with the most magnificent Islamic monument in the Western world.

The Alhambra, a sprawling palace-fortress crowning a wooded hill above the city, is a masterpiece of Islamic art — a dreamlike complex of courtyards, fountains, reflecting pools and walls covered in intricate stucco carvings and poetry. It is one of the most visited and beloved monuments on Earth.

Below the Alhambra, the ancient Moorish quarter of the Albaicín tumbles down the hillside in a maze of whitewashed houses and narrow lanes, offering breathtaking views of the palace glowing at sunset. The neighbouring Sacromonte district is the cradle of gypsy flamenco, performed in its famous cave dwellings.

Granada retains a wonderful tradition of serving free tapas with every drink, and its student-fuelled energy keeps its bars and squares lively into the night. Atmospheric, romantic and steeped in history, it is one of Spain's most captivating cities.
