Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, is one of the most remarkable cities in Africa — famously clean, safe, orderly and green, spread gracefully across a series of lush hills in the heart of the continent. In 1994, Rwanda suffered one of the worst genocides of the 20th century, in which around a million people were killed in just 100 days. The deeply moving Kigali Genocide Memorial, where over 250,000 victims are buried, tells this story with dignity and serves as a powerful place of remembrance and reconciliation.

From that tragedy, Rwanda has built a new nation, and Kigali is its proud showcase. Plastic bags are banned, the streets are spotless, and on the last Saturday of every month the entire community joins in umuganda — a national day of collective cleaning and public works — reflecting a deep culture of civic pride.

Safe, welcoming and increasingly cosmopolitan, Kigali is also the gateway to Rwanda's greatest natural treasure — the mountain gorillas of the Virunga volcanoes. Hopeful, beautiful and inspiring, it is a symbol of renewal in the heart of Africa.
