💡 About Porto

Porto, Portugal's second city, gave the entire nation its name — and lent its own to the world's most famous fortified wine. Rising steeply from the banks of the Douro River, its historic Ribeira district is a photogenic tumble of terracotta rooftops, tiled façades and narrow medieval lanes, all protected by UNESCO.

The city is defined by the river and its remarkable bridges, above all the double-decked iron Dom Luís I Bridge, designed by a student of Gustave Eiffel. Across the water in Vila Nova de Gaia, historic cellars have aged barrels of port wine for centuries, welcoming visitors for tastings.

Porto is a feast for the senses, from the blue-and-white azulejo tiles that cover its churches and railway stations to the neo-Gothic splendour of the Lello bookshop, said to have inspired Harry Potter. Its hearty cuisine and soulful character make it one of Europe's most rewarding cities to explore.
