💡 About Samarkand

Samarkand, in Uzbekistan, is one of the oldest and most legendary cities on Earth — a fabled jewel of the ancient Silk Road whose very name conjures images of caravans, conquerors and untold riches. For over two thousand years it stood at the crossroads of the great trade routes between China and the Mediterranean.

The city reached its dazzling zenith in the 14th and 15th centuries as the glittering capital of the empire of Timur (Tamerlane), who adorned it with some of the most magnificent Islamic architecture ever built. Their breathtaking beauty — towering portals, ribbed domes and walls sheathed in luminous blue tiles — remains largely intact today.

At the heart of the city lies the Registan, an ensemble of three grand madrasas facing a public square, considered one of the most spectacular architectural sights in the entire Muslim world. Nearby stand the soaring Bibi-Khanym Mosque and the shimmering blue-tiled tomb of Timur himself.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Samarkand is a place where history feels overwhelmingly present. Its azure domes rising against the desert sky make it one of the most romantic and awe-inspiring destinations in all of Central Asia.
