💡 About York

York, in the north of England, is one of Britain's most beautiful and historic cities — a place where nearly 2,000 years of history are packed within a ring of medieval walls. Founded by the Romans as Eboracum in 71 AD, it later became the Viking capital of Jorvik and a great medieval ecclesiastical centre.

The city is crowned by York Minster, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in Northern Europe, whose stained glass and soaring towers dominate the skyline. Beneath it, the tangle of medieval streets known as the Shambles, with its overhanging timber-framed shops, is one of the best-preserved medieval streets in the world.

York wears its history openly: you can walk the complete circuit of its ancient walls, explore its Viking heritage at the Jorvik Centre, and wander snickelways — narrow medieval alleys — that connect its ancient squares. Ghost tours thrive in what is often called Britain's most haunted city.

Beyond the history, York is a lively and welcoming place of independent shops, cosy tea rooms and riverside pubs. Compact and walkable, it offers an unforgettable journey through the layers of English history.
