Bangkok, officially known as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, bears a full ceremonial name of 168 Thai characters that translates roughly as "City of Angels, Great City of Immortals, Magnificent City of the Nine Gems, Seat of the King, City of Royal Palaces, Home of Gods Incarnate, Erected by Vishvakarman at Indra's Behest" — this extraordinary name has been recognised in the Guinness World Records as the world's longest place name. The city's more than 400 Buddhist temples (wats) range from the spectacular Grand Palace complex, gilded and jewelled with Khmer-influenced spires, to intimate neighbourhood shrines where monks in saffron robes receive alms at dawn — a tradition unchanged for a thousand years. Wat Pho, the oldest and largest temple in Bangkok, houses a reclining Buddha 46 metres long and 15 metres high, its feet inlaid with mother-of-pearl depicting the 108 auspicious characteristics of the Buddha; the temple complex also houses Thailand's first university and the birthplace of traditional Thai massage.

Bangkok's street food scene is one of the greatest in the world — Michelin has awarded stars to humble noodle stalls, and the city's thousands of vendors, working from motorcarts, open-fronted shophouses and floating boats, serve a cuisine of extraordinary freshness, complexity and flavour at prices that make fine dining accessible to anyone. The Chao Phraya River, which bisects the city from north to south, is still heavily used for both passenger and freight transportation via an intricate network of water taxis, express boats and cross-river ferries — on it you can travel from the gleaming towers of the Sathorn business district to ancient riverside temples in minutes. Bangkok has transformed itself with breathtaking speed: in 1960 it had a population of just over one million; today Greater Bangkok houses over 15 million people and its skyline bristles with skyscrapers, luxury hotels and elevated expressways.

The city's night markets — Chatuchak on weekends, the night bazaars of Asiatique on the river, the glittering stalls of Yaowarat (Chinatown) — are experiences of sensory overload, where antiques, street food, fake designer goods, live music and traditional crafts compete for the visitor's attention. Muay Thai, Thailand's ancient martial art and national sport, is practised and performed in boxing stadiums throughout the city, where the bouts are accompanied by the hypnotic rhythm of traditional pi phat music that rises and falls with the intensity of the fight.
