Luang Prabang, cradled between mountains at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers in northern Laos, is one of the most serene and spiritually rich towns in Southeast Asia. The former royal capital of Laos, its entire old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of exceptional beauty.

The town is a harmonious blend of traditional Lao wooden houses and elegant French colonial villas, shaded by palm trees and dotted with dozens of gleaming Buddhist temples. Saffron-robed monks are everywhere, and the atmosphere is one of gentle, unhurried calm.

Each dawn, hundreds of monks walk silently through the streets in the alms-giving ceremony (tak bat), receiving offerings of rice from kneeling locals in a moving ritual that has continued for centuries. It is one of the most sacred and photographed traditions in the Buddhist world.

Surrounded by jungle-clad hills, cascading turquoise waterfalls and sleepy river life, Luang Prabang moves to a slow and peaceful rhythm. Its night market, riverside cafés and profound spiritual atmosphere make it a place travellers find hard to leave.
