Reykjavik is the northernmost capital of any sovereign state in the world and the heart of one of the most geologically active places on the planet. Founded, according to saga, by Norse settlers in 874 AD, its name means "Smoky Bay," after the steam rising from nearby geothermal springs.

The entire city is heated and powered almost entirely by clean geothermal and hydroelectric energy drawn from beneath the volcanic landscape. Its striking Hallgrímskirkja church, inspired by the basalt columns of Iceland's lava flows, towers over the colourful rooftops of the compact centre.

Reykjavik is the perfect base for witnessing nature's greatest spectacles — the dancing Northern Lights in winter and the midnight sun in summer, when daylight barely fades. Just beyond the city lie erupting geysers, thundering waterfalls and the famous milky-blue waters of the Blue Lagoon.
