💡 About Fez
Fez (Fès), in northern Morocco, is the country's spiritual and cultural capital and home to the largest living medieval city in the world. Founded in the 9th century, its ancient walled medina, Fes el-Bali, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most extraordinary and disorienting places on the planet.
Within its walls lies a labyrinth of some 9,000 narrow, winding lanes — a car-free maze so complex that visitors inevitably get lost, and where goods are still transported by donkey and mule as they have been for over a thousand years. It is a genuine journey back into the Middle Ages.
Fez is home to the University of al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 AD and recognised as the oldest continuously operating university in the world. The city is also famous for its ancient leather tanneries, where hides are still dyed by hand in vast honeycombs of stone vats using centuries-old methods, best viewed from surrounding terraces.
A centre of traditional craftsmanship, learning and Islamic culture, Fez offers an intense and utterly authentic Moroccan experience. Overwhelming, ancient and endlessly fascinating, it is a living monument to a golden age.
