💡 About Lima

Lima, the sprawling capital of Peru, was founded by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1535 and served for centuries as the richest and most powerful city in Spanish South America — its historic centre remains a UNESCO World Heritage Site of grand colonial palaces and churches.

Perched on cliffs above the Pacific Ocean, Lima has emerged as one of the great gastronomic capitals of the world, with several of its restaurants ranked among the very best on Earth. Peruvian cuisine, blending Indigenous, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese influences, is a global sensation.

The city is a gateway to the wonders of Peru — the Amazon, the Andes and Machu Picchu — yet it holds its own treasures, from pre-Columbian pyramids rising among modern neighbourhoods to the bohemian seaside districts of Barranco and Miraflores.
