💡 About Lucerne

Lucerne, set on the shores of a shimmering alpine lake and ringed by snow-capped peaks, is one of the most beautiful cities in Switzerland and the picture-perfect gateway to the country's central mountains. Its setting, where the Reuss River flows out of Lake Lucerne, is the stuff of postcards.

The city's icon is the Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke), a covered wooden footbridge dating from the 14th century, decorated with painted panels and guarded by an octagonal water tower — the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe. Its well-preserved medieval old town is a delight of frescoed facades and cobbled squares.

Lucerne has long moved travellers to poetry: the melancholy Lion Monument, carved into a cliff face to honour Swiss guards who died in the French Revolution, was described by Mark Twain as the most mournful piece of stone in the world. The city also hosts a world-renowned classical music festival.

Surrounded by legendary peaks like Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi, reachable by cogwheel railway and cable car, Lucerne is a base for spectacular alpine adventures. Romantic, historic and breathtakingly scenic, it embodies the storybook image of Switzerland.
