Moscow, one of the largest cities on Earth by area and the most populous city in Europe with over 12 million inhabitants, has been the seat of Russian power for over 600 years, surviving invasion by Mongols, Poles, Napoleonic French and Nazi German armies to emerge repeatedly as the dominant force in Eurasian history. The Moscow Metro, opened on 15 May 1935 under Stalin's direct supervision, is famous worldwide for its extraordinarily ornate architecture — stations were designed as "underground palaces" for the Soviet workers, featuring marble floors quarried from across the USSR, stained glass windows, bronze chandeliers, mosaics depicting revolutionary heroism and vaulted ceilings that evoke cathedrals as much as transport infrastructure. The Kremlin, a triangular fortified complex of red brick walls stretching 2.2 kilometres around a 28-hectare enclosure on the bank of the Moscow River, contains within its walls five palaces, four cathedrals, multiple museums, the Russian Presidential administration and the Grand Kremlin Palace — it has been the symbolic heart of Russian political power since the 14th century.

Red Square, the vast cobblestoned plaza adjoining the Kremlin, is the ceremonial heart of Russia — it is framed by the fairy-tale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral (completed in 1561 under Ivan the Terrible), the imposing GUM department store and the Lenin Mausoleum where the embalmed body of Vladimir Lenin has lain on public display since 1924. Moscow's climate is one of extremes: winters plunge below -30°C with heavy snowfall, while summers can reach 35°C — yet Muscovites celebrate both seasons, filling the city's outdoor ice rinks in winter and the banks of the Moscow River in summer.

The Bolshoi Theatre, whose name literally means "Grand Theatre," has been Russia's preeminent stage for ballet and opera since 1825, and its company remains one of the most celebrated in the world, with productions that reflect the perfectionist artistic traditions of the Russian imperial court. Moscow is home to more billionaires than any other city in Europe, and the contrast between the ostentatious wealth displayed in the restaurants and boutiques of the Arbat district and the modest apartments of the outer ring roads mirrors the extraordinary economic transformations Russia has undergone since the fall of communism in 1991. The city's ring road system — with the Garden Ring, the Third Ring Road and the MKAD encircling successive waves of urban expansion — maps the city's growth across the centuries, each ring marking a different era of Moscow's restless expansion.
