💡 About Riga

Riga, the capital of Latvia, is the largest and most cosmopolitan of the three Baltic capitals — a lively, elegant city on the banks of the Daugava River with a history stretching back over 800 years. Founded by German crusaders, it grew rich as a Hanseatic trading port and a meeting point of cultures.

Riga's medieval old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a picturesque tangle of cobbled streets, Gothic church spires, guild halls and cosy squares. But the city's greatest architectural glory lies just beyond — Riga boasts the finest collection of Art Nouveau architecture in the world, whole streets of buildings adorned with fantastical faces, flowers and figures.

The city has endured a turbulent history under Swedish, Russian and Soviet rule, and its powerful museums recount the Baltic struggle for freedom. Since regaining independence, Riga has blossomed into a dynamic European capital with a vibrant nightlife and arts scene.

Riga's Central Market, housed in enormous former Zeppelin hangars, is one of the largest in Europe and a wonderful place to sample Latvian produce. Grand, atmospheric and full of character, Riga is the beating heart of the Baltics.
