๐Ÿ’ก About Yangon

Yangon (Rangoon), the largest city of Myanmar, is a place of faded grandeur and profound spirituality, where the golden spires of ancient pagodas rise above streets lined with crumbling British colonial buildings. Long isolated from the world, it retains an atmosphere and character quite unlike anywhere else in Asia.

Dominating the city โ€” and the entire spiritual life of the country โ€” is the Shwedagon Pagoda, a breathtaking golden stupa nearly a hundred metres tall, said to enshrine relics of the Buddha and gilded with tonnes of gold and thousands of jewels. At sunset, its glowing form is one of the most magnificent sights in the Buddhist world.

Yangon holds the largest collection of colonial-era architecture in Southeast Asia, a legacy of its time as a jewel of the British Empire. These grand, weathered buildings, along with bustling markets and street stalls, give the downtown a uniquely evocative, time-worn feel.

Warm, devout and deeply traditional, Yangon offers a window into a nation only recently opened to visitors. Its teahouses, thanaka-painted faces and gentle hospitality make it an unforgettable and poignant destination.
