How to Plan the Perfect City Break

A well-planned city break packs a huge amount of joy into just a few days. But the difference between a relaxing escape and a stressful rush often comes down to how you plan it. Here is how to get it right.

Choose the right city and length

Match the destination to your time. A two-night trip suits a compact city like Bruges or Ljubljana, while sprawling capitals like London or Rome deserve at least three or four nights. Book flights for the shoulder season to save money and dodge crowds.

Stay central and pack light

The single best decision is to stay in or near the old town, so you can walk everywhere and pop back to your hotel to rest. Travel with carry-on only — it saves time, money and stress at the airport.

Plan loosely, not rigidly

Pick two or three must-see sights and book those in advance to skip the queues. Leave the rest of your time open for wandering, long lunches and happy accidents — the moments you will remember most. Build in one relaxed evening and you will return home refreshed rather than exhausted.
