💡 About Brasília
Brasília, the capital of Brazil, is unlike any other city on Earth — a bold, utopian metropolis conjured out of the empty central highlands in just 41 months and inaugurated in 1960. Conceived to shift the nation's focus inland from the coast, it stands as the greatest monument to modernist architecture and urban planning ever built.
The entire city was designed from scratch: the urban planner Lúcio Costa laid it out in the shape of an aeroplane or a bird, while the visionary architect Oscar Niemeyer filled it with breathtaking buildings of soaring white concrete curves. This unique modernist ensemble earned Brasília status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Its landmark buildings are icons of 20th-century design: the twin-towered National Congress, the crown-of-thorns cathedral flooded with light through stained glass, and the palaces of government floating on reflecting pools. Wide monumental axes and vast open spaces give the city a futuristic, almost dreamlike quality.
As the seat of Brazilian government and a symbol of national ambition, Brasília is a fascinating experiment in living architecture. Spacious, orderly and visually stunning, it offers a compelling vision of a nation building its own future.
