How to Experience a City Like a Local

The most memorable travel moments rarely happen at the famous landmarks. They happen in neighbourhood cafés, local markets and quiet streets far from the crowds. Here is how to peel back the tourist layer and experience a city like someone who lives there.

Stay and eat local

Choose accommodation in a residential neighbourhood rather than the tourist centre, and eat where the locals eat — follow the crowds to busy, unpretentious spots and visit food markets in the morning. In Madrid, that means late tapas; in Tokyo, a tiny neighbourhood izakaya.

Move like a resident

Use public transport, rent a bike, or simply walk without a fixed plan. Pick one neighbourhood and explore it slowly rather than racing across the whole city ticking off sights.

Connect with people

Learn a few words of the local language, chat with shopkeepers and baristas, and consider a locally guided experience or a community event. Travel is at its richest when it becomes about people, not just places — slow down, stay curious, and let the city reveal itself.
