Tokyo vs Kyoto: Modern Metropolis or Ancient Capital?

A first trip to Japan almost always sparks the same question: Tokyo or Kyoto? The two cities sit just a couple of hours apart by bullet train, yet they feel like different worlds.

Tokyo is the ultimate modern metropolis — a dazzling, endless city of neon canyons, world-class dining and futuristic technology. Kyoto is its serene opposite: a place of ancient temples, geisha districts, Zen gardens and quiet tradition.

What to do

In Tokyo you lose yourself in the crowds of Shibuya, shop in Ginza and eat your way through Tsukiji. In Kyoto you walk beneath thousands of torii gates at Fushimi Inari, admire the Golden Pavilion and sip matcha in a centuries-old teahouse.
